No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
